Barbara has many years of experience in theatre as a producer, writer, director and performer. ‘Basically, I just love creating good theatre, as well as providing opportunities for others to do the same.’ She has done solo and ensemble work, created shows with groups of particular orientation (including ethnic, Aboriginal and disability communities), the Armidale and District Historical Society and the Armidale Dumaresq Civic Precinct.
In 2014 Barbara formed High Country Theatre because she’d ‘seen a lot of good talent in Armidale but not enough chances for people to take to take part in the many aspects of theatre’. Barbara’s commitment to theatre as an essential part of a living, breathing community has been recognised with two local Australia Day Awards for cultural activities.
Barbara has run several theatre companies including Company 2A in Sydney which staged 11 productions, many at the Belvoir Theatre Downstairs. Her work has been broadcast on Radio National, ABC1 and SBS television. Barbara continued her creative work after arriving in Armidale in 2000. She is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in Theatre Studies at the University of New England, Australia.
